What are R&D Tax Credits?

R&D Tax Credits are a government incentive designed to encourage companies to invest in innovative projects in science or technology. They allow businesses to claim back a portion of the money spent on research and development, either as a reduction in their corporation tax liability, tax repayment or in certain circumstances, even a payable credit. Our tax advisors will inform you of all of your options to allow you to make an informed decision.

If your company is developing new products, devices, processes, or services, or even improving existing ones, you may be eligible. We help companies across a wide range of sectors in the UK to claim R&D Tax Credits.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What costs qualify for R&D Tax Credits?
Qualifying costs include staff salaries, National Insurance, and pension contributions for employees directly involved in R&D. You can also claim for subcontractor costs, consumables (like materials and utilities), software licences, and some types of cloud computing. Only costs that directly contribute to eligible R&D work are claimable.
Can I claim for unsuccessful projects?
Yes. HMRC recognises that R&D carries uncertainty, and projects don’t need to succeed to qualify. As long as the project aimed to overcome a technical or scientific challenge, the associated costs may still be eligible, even if the outcome didn’t go as planned.
How far back can I make a claim?
You can claim R&D Tax Credits up to 2 years after the end of your period of account.
How long does it take to receive my R&D benefit?
Once submitted, HMRC typically processes R&D claims within 6 to 8 weeks. However, this can vary depending on claim complexity and HMRC’s workload. Accurate, well-supported claims prepared by experienced advisers often receive faster turnaround.
What documentation do I need to support my claim?
You’ll need a breakdown of eligible costs and a technical narrative describing the qualifying R&D work. Supporting evidence such as timesheets, project plans, and expenditure records can strengthen your submission. Orbit prepares these on your behalf to ensure a compliant and robust claim.
Will my R&D claim turn into a HMRC enquiry?
While HMRC reviews all claims, well-prepared submissions that clearly align with the guidelines are far less likely to be challenged. At Orbit, we prioritise compliance and include investigation support, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
Can I still claim R&D Tax Credits if I’ve never done it before?
Many eligible businesses have never claimed simply because they weren’t aware they qualified. Whether this is your first claim or you’re switching from another adviser, Orbit can assess your position, recover what you’re owed, and establish a smooth process moving forward.
